How to Say "No"

With technology, constant interconnectivity, and changing workplace cultures, setting boundaries at work is imperative for health and balance.

Types of boundaries you can set and protect:

☑️ Stick to your set working hours.

• Minimize checking email outside of office hours.

• Actually take time off – set an “out-of-office” message.

☑️ Communicate priorities and values.

• Set expectations regarding the work you were hired to do, will do, what you’re willing to pick up (being a “team player”), and what is outside your scope.

☑️ Delegate work when it is outside your capacity/responsibility.

☑️ Communicate when your boundary is crossed.

• This is where you say no!

So how can you say no without sounding harsh? Here are some examples:

☑️ That's beyond my bandwidth right now.

☑️ Thanks but I am not able to take that on right now.

☑️ No, I can't do that, but here is what I can do...

☑️ Sounds like a good idea, but I can't commit to that right now.

☑️ I understand you really need help, I am just not able to say yes.

☑️ I appreciate you asking me, but I can't help right now. I will let you know if anything changes.

☑️ I'm happy to work on these additional projects, however I need two weeks rather than one to do a good job. How would you like me to prioritize?

What are some boundaries you set for yourself to maintain a healthy balance?
